[F.3.] Energy Source

Post by edstth » Wed 02 Oct 2019, 22:55

Good Evening

I have a question regarding Chapter F.3. Energy Source

Is it allowed to use an original unmodified commercial drill battery for the power supply? For example Bosch Professional GBA 18 V 5.0 Ah M-C, 18 V battery voltage, 5 Ah battery capacity.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Hello, this subforum is in French but...
For your question, you can use a drill battery, but as it isn't the original usage, you will need a lipo bag, because there is 18650 in the case according to rules.

As edstth said, it's an "unmodified commercial drill battery". So if the battery is not open, and use exactly like on the drill tool it rescpect the rules, and didn't need a lipo bag.
But on some drill battery the safety chip to protect the battery is not inside the battery but inside the drill tool, so in this case the battery is not as safe as a power bank for example.

Please wait an official answer of the "Rules committee" or the "Refereeing referent".

Detail of the battery (I have not found information of the safety chip)

For this specific battery, there is no safety chip as you can see here

But on other model, such as Ryobi ONE+ there is an integrated safety chip
same goes for Makita 18V 5Ah at least for BL1830 and BL1850 (having one of them right now open in my hand).

Rules says "Batteries permanently in certified and unmodified fireproof bags (whether in the robot or
on the stand, even in storage).
• Exception in the case of the following batteries, authorized without the conditions listed above:
- Lithium-based batteries for LEGO Mindstorm / laptop / cellphone provided
they have not been disassembled and are used for the intended use of the manufacturer."
So you must use bag with drill lithium battery

This assertion is correct.
