Controls

Experimental rockets shall be pre-qualified before the 4th RCE meeting [1] (to take place the last weekend of June 2009). Further controls will be held directly in Biscarrosse. Club projects that are not ready on time will not be launched!

It is possible to organize an earlier pre-qualification by contacting Vincent RICHE: vincent.riche@planete-sciences.org. This technical-review is more than necessary if you conduct a mini-rocket project. Please note that for the space clubs from Japan, a dedicated pre-qualification review is planned begin of July 2009, in Japan.

Launches

Launches are usually planned over 5 days. The first days are traditionally reserved for rockets launched with a Cariacou motor (mini-rockets) under the responsibility of Planète Sciences. The end of the week is then reserved for rockets launched with a Barasinga or a hybrid motor (Perseus project), under the responsibility of both CNES and Planète Sciences volunteers.

During the same period, weather balloons will also be released.

Since 2008, a Cansat competition is also organized during the launching campaign. It consists of the drop, from a weather balloon, of a soda can with onboard electronics (Cansat),. The Cansat must land and fullfil a specific mission, which will be evaluated by a jury.

For curious people of all kind

You will also be able to attend launches of experimental rockets, cansats and weather balloons (only if you have been granted the authorization to access the military base – see section below).

[1] RCE: “Rencontre des Clubs Espace” – meeting organized by Planete Sciences, which gathers all the space clubs involved in the design of a space project to be set up during the year. Project follow-ups, technical reviews and presentations take place during this one-day meeting. A total of 4 RCEs are held over the year.

2. 2009 Edition: new dates, new place

The previously known as « National launching campaign » is now « C'Space les Rendez-vous Espace Étudiants » (C'Space Students Space Rendezvous) or C'Space, organized by Planète Sciences and CNES. R2E 2009 will take place… from Saturday the 22nd to Sunday the 30th of August at Biscarrosse in the french department called “Les Landes”.

The provisional timeschedule (see below) includes weather balloons releases, cansats contests, experimental rockets launchings (including Barasinga and pro 75 motors, two-stage rockets,), mini drones demonstration, hybrid rockets launchings… We are currently working on proposals for workshops in Biscarrosse as well as lectures and evening activities.

This schedule is possible futher to several months of prospects and meetings organized by CNES and Planète Sciences in various military camps which have both the facilities and the resources to host us.

Biscarrosse

Biscarrosse is a town located in the French department of Les Landes, in the region of Aquitaine. It is a town by the beach well known for its tourisms activities in summer time… No kebab-sandwiches on Wednesdays evenings for the volunteers, [private jokes among the volunteers of Planete sciences] but convenience shops, campsites and other fast-food restaurants are located very close to the town (a couple of minutes by car).

The CELM

CELM stands for "Site Landes du Centre d'Essais des Lancement de Missiles": it's a missile ignition facility, within a military base. Located between the towns of Biscarrosse-plage and Mimizan, it will be our new location for the launching campaign.

We are also very grateful to the CELM's pyrothechnics team to provide us with support and assistance with logistics.

The planning

As usual, we will start that week by a welcome ceremony with all the participants.

Project controls will start as soon as possible for mini-rockets can be launched as early as Monday morning. As for the experimental rockets, Perseus included, the projects will be launched between Wednesday and Friday (no launch will be possible on Saturday).

We will end the launching campaign week with the traditional Saturday's evening party, after having worked all together on the fall-back of the installation. Departures are planned starting from Sunday morning…

Registrations

The access to the military camp is restricted to registered participants. Registrations must be completed by Planète Sciences by Thursday the 20th of July THE LATEST. Indeed, as CELM is both a military camp and an ignition facility, details about the visitor (first name, last name, nationality, birthdate and birthplace) must be provided to CELM at least one month before the day of your arrival. Each person that will need to access to the launching site or to the accommodations must be registered. Prices and practical details will soon be uploaded on the Event pages of the website.

Meals

Meals will be served on the camp, in a restaurant managed by the military staff. The meals schedule will be adapted to our planning. We shall, however, be on time!

Accommodations

Housing will be provided in dormitory rooms of 6 beds each. Each of them is clean and bright, with a locker. Sheets will be provided but don't forget to bring your own padlock.

In order to provide full board accommodation for an interesting price, the CNES and Planète Sciences need to organize everything months before the event. That's why we're asking you to register as soon as possible! Three packages are available:

Group package – 07/27 to 08/03 For those who are parts of a team with a project (rocket, weather balloon, cansat …);

Workshop package - 07/29 to 08/03 In order to access all the space related animations (lectures, workshops, forums …) and become addicted to space!

Open package – starting 07/28: For you to make up your own schedule!

Registration R2E 2008

Please return it to Planète Sciences before July the 10th with a bank check payable to Planète Sciences (don't forget to write your complete name on the back of it). It will be refunded if your project does not pass the preliminary control.

A confirmation will be sent back by email within 8 days (for Japanese groups: please take in consideration it might take a week for your application to reach France and Planète Sciences).

After 08/07/10, it will only be possible to register on-site, depending on availability and for 25 € a day.

How to go to La Courtine ?

La Courtine is 480 km from Paris and 90 km from Clermont-Ferrand, a small town located in the south-east of Creuse, near the border of Corrèze and Puy de Dôme.

By car

From Paris: 5 hours We strongly advise you to come along with other people (carpooling). If you have free seats in your car, please state so on the registration form, so we can put people with free seats and people without a car in contact.

By bus

Departure from Paris and Bordeaux to La Courtine: Sunday the 27th of July. Departure from La Courtine to Paris or Bordeaux: Sunday the 03rd of August.

Caution : There is no more than 30 seats left in the bus for the journey from Paris to La Courtine on 07/27.

There is no more seats in the bus for the journey back La Courtine-Paris on 08/03.

The reception will be open from 07/26 to 03/08 between 9am and 7pm, located in building 117 – Craplet entrance.

Upon your arrival, go to the Planète Sciences stand to get:

CAUTION: The bedroom keys will only be available in exchange of a deposit check of 20 €. This check will be returned to you when we get the keys back.

Accommodations

The registration fee not only includes access to the launching sites, lectures and animations, but provides full board accommodation as well! Housing will be provided in four military buildings with 70 beds each (2 bed rooms) in the La Courtine military base. The buildings are of standard military model, clean and in good condition. If you are allergic to feather, you should take your own cushion. Beddings will be provided. The rooms can be locked. The military base is huge and the launch pad lies 6 km away.

All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be served at the same location, cooked by a chef, from Sunday the 27th of July (dinner) to Sunday the 03rd of August (breakfast).
